U21 challenge round gets underway this weekend, as the fields for the upcoming U21 provincials look to be rounded out. 2 spots are still available in the women’s field, with the Hamilton Victoria Club hosting those teams looking to claim one this weekend. First 12 U21 Provincial Qualifiers

The first weekend of the U21 playdowns is in the books, with the first 12 provincial spots already claimed. Carleton Place curling club hosted the men’s ‘A’ qualifier, where team Mooibroek won the A birth, and team Goodkey claimed the B birth. The women’s ‘A’ qualifier took place at the Renfrew curling club, where teams Auld and Wallingford claimed the A births, and team Gray won the B birth. The other 6 births were claimed at the Welland curling club, which hosted the men’s and women’s ‘B’ qualifier. A-side winners were teams Warriner and Coburn for the women, and teams Hart and Rooney for the men. The women’s B-side winner was team Kiemele, while men’s B-side winners were teams Poole and Massey. The final 4 provincial births will be handed out next weekend at the U21 challenge round. The men will play at the Lindsay curling club, while the women will play at the Hamilton Victoria club. The journey to represent Ontario at U21 Nationals begins today for U21 teams across Ontario. U21 Women begin with the East qualifier at Renfrew Curling Club, and the West qualifier at Welland Curling Club. 5 Champions

The KW Classic Youth Cashspiel concluded Sunday, with 5 teams added to the list of champions. The major event saw an expanded 55 teams competing at Westmount, KW Granite and Elmira, with U21’s, U18’s and U15’s all competing alongside each other. Claiming the U21 title were teams Han Siyu and Hart. Han Siyu met team Kiemele in the women’s final, where a back and forth match went the way of the Chinese as they finished their Canadian tour with a victory. Hart matched up with team Sinnett in the men’s final, where the Americans were downed 5-3 by team Hart. The U18 finals saw teams Inglis and Del Conte squaring off on the boy’s side, and teams Belliveau and S. Johnston meeting in the girl’s final. The boy’s final saw an extra end affair capped off by a double for the win by team Inglis. Team Belliveau captured the girl’s title, as they ran Johnston out of rocks in the 8th. It’s Playoff Time In KW

The round robin portion of the KW Classic Youth Cashspiel concluded Saturday night, with the playoff teams and matches revealed. The U21 division saw teams Kiemele, Han Siyu, Mooibroek, and Fenech finish atop their pools and earn a bye to the semi-finals. Quarter-finals will feature team Steele taking on team Bernard, and team Coburn taking on team Han Yu for the women. On the men’s side, quarter-finals will feature team Steep squaring off with team Hart, and team Sinnett squaring off with team Zhang. In the U18 division, teams Kropf, Belliveau, Del Conte, and Inglis won their pools and advanced to the semi-finals. Girl’s quarter-finals will feature team Evely/Woodend vs team S.Johnston, and team C.Johnston vs Guilbault. The boy’s semis will see team Gorman vs team Pace, and team Fitzsimons vs team Dobson. U15 action will see Tardif vs Albrechtas, and Stratton vs Harris in A semi-finals. In the B semi-finals, it’ll be Kiers vs Barta, and Brittain vs Ideson.
