The Weekend In KW

This weekend the OJCT heads to Kitchener-Waterloo for the KW Classic Youth Cashspiel. This year the major event will take place at three different venues throughout the region, with Westmount Golf and Country Club, KW Granite Club, and Elmira & District Curling Club hosting games over the weekend. For the first time, three different age groups will be playing, with U21, U18 and U15 divisions all taking part. Ryan and Skrlik Reign Supreme at the Superspiel

The Superspiel wrapped up Sunday, with both winners hailing from Western Canada. JT Ryan’s Manitoba team won the men’s title, while Kayla Skrlik from Alberta claimed the women’s title. The wins capped off great weekends for both teams, with both qualifying A side and winning both playoff games. Finalists were team Stopera from the U.S. on the men’s side, and team Witschonke from Switzerland on the women’s side. Rounding out the championship round were semi-finalist teams Hoesli and Mooibroek for the men, and teams Zacharias and Deschenes for the women. Superspiel Action Gets Underway Tomorrow

One of the OJCT’s major events, the Brokerlink OVCA Superspiel, gets underway tomorrow in Ottawa. 6 curling clubs in Ottawa and the surrounding area will host games over the weekend, with the finals taking place at the Ottawa Granite club. Han and Steep Win Brampton; 6 Advance to Superspiel

The Brampton U21 Junior Cashspiel concluded Sunday with team Steep claiming the men’s title and team Yu Han winning the women’s side. Steep won the men’s title in a 3-2 final over team Massey, while Han bested team Denyer 9-3 in the women’s final. Semi-finalists included teams Mooibroek and Zhang on the men’s side and teams S. Johnston and Siyu Han on the women’s side. Making the quarter-finals were teams Naus and Hang Qu for the men, and teams Coburn and Don for the women. The OVCA Superspiel Qualifier also came to a close Sunday in Almonte, with the final 6 Superspiel births up for grabs. Teams Gray and Hahn went undefeated in the triple knockout event and claimed the first two births. After dropping their first game, team Sutherland was able to reel off 5 straight wins and claim the women’s B birth. Team Poole rebounded after losing the A final and claimed the men’s B birth. The C finals featured teams Thorne and Deschenes on the women’s side, and teams Gazeley and Inglis on the men’s side. Team Deschenes claimed the last women’s Superspiel birth by a 9-1 score in the women’s C final. The action is heating up at Almonte and Brampton

Saturday night brought to an end the round robin action at the Brampton U21 Junior Cashspiel. On the men’s side, team Mooibroek leads the way in pool A with a 3-1 record. Tied for second at 2-2 are teams Massey and Hang Qu. In pool B, team Ze Zhong Zhang leads at 4-0, followed by team Steep at 3-1 and team Naus at 2-2. On the women’s side, teams Yu Han and Siyu Han are setting the pace with undefeated records in pool play. Teams Johnston and Denyer are a game back respectively, with both teams at 3-1 records. Saturday also produced and revealed some exciting matchups in the triple knockout format of the OVCA Superspiel Qualifier at Almonte. The women’s A qualifier is set with teams Gray and Thorne squaring off. The B semi features teams Sutherland and Kastrau, while the C quarter sees team Wallingford taking on team Deschenes. The men’s side had it’s A qualifier revealed, with teams Hahn and Poole getting ready to clash. The B semi will have team Gazeley taking on team Inglis, and the C quarter will see team Fisher taking on team Biemans.
