The U21 provincial field was rounded out last night at the Lindsay curling club, where the final spots were filled at the U21 challenge round. The men’s side saw team Purdy win 3 straight to claim the A-side and earn their spot at provincials. They won their first game 6-3 against team Prenevost, and followed it up with a 5-2 win over team Rotskas in the semi-finals. The A final saw Purdy prevail 10-7 over team Hocevar. Meanwhile on the women’s side, team Steele won 3 in a row to claim the A-side provincial birth. Steele beat Don 7-5 in their first game, Doig 10-2 in their second game, and Bernard 7-6 in the women’s A final.
The B-side winners followed similar paths, as teams Rooney and Thorne dropped their opening games, before winning 4 straight. Rooney dropped a tight opening game to team King 5-4, but responded with a 8-5 win over team Van Veghel. They followed it up with a 7-3 win over team Rotskas, and a 9-3 win over team Prenevost. In the B final, Rooney won 8-2 over team Hocevar. Team Thorne lost their first game 12-5 to team Doig, but bounced back with a 7-6 win over team Don, and a 9-5 win over team Johnston. A B-semi rematch against team Doig went 10-5 in Thorne’s favour, before they took down team Bernard 6-2 in the B final.
Congratulations to teams Purdy, Steele, Rooney, and Thorne, as they advance to U21 provincials, December 27-30 at the Guelph curling club.
