It was a double dip of action this weekend, as many junior curlers across Ontario ventured either to High Park or Oakville. The Stu Sells junior tankard took place at High Park, with 12 men’s teams and 16 women’s teams looking to claim the title. After the final draw Sunday, teams Steele and Horgan were crowned the 2019 champions! Team Steele won a tight women’s final 8-7 in an extra end, while team Horgan claimed the men’s title in a 6-3 victory. Runner-up finishes went to team Dudt for the women and team McNamara for the men. Semi-finalists were teams Gray and Gauthier for the women, and teams Mooibroek and Sinnett for the men. Also in the playoffs were teams Flannery, Bernard, Kiemele and Thorne on the women’s side, while teams Bissonnette, Van Veghel, Del Conte, and Robinson rounded out the men’s side.
The Oakville curling club hosted the Optimist U18 Bonspiel, where 16 men’s and 12 women’s teams looked for a championship. Team Jacob Jones finished round robin 4-0 and followed that up with two more wins to claim the men’s title. Team Jones won the men’s final 4-1 over team Harry Jones, who entered the final with a 4-1 record. Men’s semi-finalists were teams Langworth and Roitz, while team Bryant claimed the B final over team Dobson. Team Ramsay won the women’s title, and capped off a 6-0 weekend with a 3-2 win over team Aucoin. Women’s semi-finalists were teams Declerq and Scrimgeour, while the B final saw team Harris best team Money.
